Malt Extract Agar
Product Details
Malt Extract Agar is a solid medium used for the cultivation and maintenance of fungi, particularly yeast and molds. The medium is based on the formula recommended by Thom and Church. Pancreatic Digest of Gelatin provide nitrogenous sources for the growth of yeasts and molds, while Maltose, Dextrin and Glycerol are the main carbohydrates. Agar is the gelifying agent. Its low pH prevents the growth of bacteria, while allowing that of fungi.

Maltose (12.75 g/L), Pancreatic Digest of Gelatin (0.78 g/L), Dextrin (2.75 g/L), Agar (15.0 g/L), Glycerol (2.35 g/L). Final pH: 4.7± 0.2 at 25 °C. Grams per liter may be adjusted or formula supplemented to obtain desired performance.

Usage Method
Mix 33.6 grams of the medium in one liter of purified water until evenly dispersed. Heat with repeated stirring and boil to dissolve completely. Distribute and autoclave at 118°C for 15 minutes. DO NOT OVERHEAT.

Storage
Store the sealed bottle containing the dehydrated medium at 2 to 30°C. Once opened and recapped, place the container in a low humidity environment at the same storage temperature. Protect it from moisture and light. The dehydrated medium should be discarded if it is not free flowing or if the color has changed from the original color.
