MacConkey Agar W/O Crystal Violet (CV) and Salt is a differential medium that restricts swarming of Proteus spp., and facilitates the isolation and differentiation of Gram-negative enteric bacilli from samples containing swarming strains of Proteus spp. Sodium Chloride is deleted from the medium to provide an electrolyte deficient medium preventing Proteus spp. from spreading. The absence of crystal violet from the medium allows the growth of Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, and Mycobacterium spp.
